20 Hogfather This is another one of the Death books, in this story the Auditors have hired an assassin to get rid of the Hogfather, the Discworld’s equivalent of Father Christmas, or Santa Claus; Death takes on the role of the Hogfather to stop some of the drastic outcomes of there been no one in a big red suit with a jolly disposition flying around the world for the holiday season. Death’s granddaughter, Susan, helps solve the mystery that will save the Hogfather from destruction, which becomes more complicated as bizarre anthropomorphic personifications begin to pop up all over the place – such as the Tooth Fairy, the Sock Eater and the Verucca Gnome. Hogfather, which also sees the wizards of the Unseen University in their usual tangle of politics and circular arguments, has a dark quality to it, analysing the human need to attach mystical significance to the things we don’t understand – it is a pretty deep tale and slightly darker than its predecessors. | | | |
