28 Monstrous Regiment Monstrous Regiment introduces the reader to the country of Borogravia, a place always at war. Polly Perks is a young woman who works for her father in his inn, The Duchess, named after a Borogravian legendary folk figure that watches over, and apparently rules, everyone – only no one has seen her for decades. Almost every conceivable action in Borogravia is an "abominations unto Nuggan", a dying god that permeates a country nearing its end. Polly’s brother is reported missing in action so she dresses as a man and joins the army, a woman doing a man’s job is an abominations unto Nuggan, to go and search for him. Polly meets some other new characters among the recruits, including Maladict the reformed Vampire who drinks coffee instead of blood, a Troll and an Igor, who are all taken under the protective wing of Jackrum, a legendary Borogravian sergeant. The story gives an insight into men and women, their differences and battlefield camps and all the in-betweens thereof. | | | |
